Step-by-Step Hardwood Floor Refinishing Process
Inspection & Prep
- Evaluate the floor: Check for damage, deep scratches, stains, or loose boards.
- Clear the area: Furniture and rugs are removed by homeowner. Floor vents are covered, and the room is sealed off to contain dust.
Repairs (if needed)
- Fix problem areas: Replace damaged boards, nail down loose planks, and repair any problem areas before sanding.
Sanding the Floor
- Remove the old finish: Using a drum sander or dustless sanding system, we strip away the existing finish and surface scratches.
- Multiple grits: Start with coarse sandpaper and finish with fine to ensure a smooth surface.
Cleaning & Prep for Finish
- Vacuum and tack: Thorough cleaning to remove all sanding dust from the surface, corners, and cracks.
- Inspect: Make sure the floor is smooth, even, and ready for stain or sealant.
Staining (optional)
- Customize the look: Choose a stain color to match your home’s style. This step is optional if you prefer the natural wood tone.
- Apply evenly: The stain is applied and allowed to dry thoroughly before finishing coats go on.
Finishing Coats
- Apply polyurethane or water-based finish: This seals and protects the floor. Usually, 2–3 coats are applied.
- Dry & cure time: Floors are left to dry between coats, and full curing can take several days depending on the product used. On average our finishes are completely cured in just 3 days.
Final Buff & Clean
- A buffing pass ensures a smooth, even surface before final coat of finish is applied.
- Final cleanup is done so your floors are spotless and ready to enjoy.
How Long Does It Take?
A typical refinishing project takes 2–5 days, depending on the size of the area and the drying time of the finish.
